Types of Cooking and Cancer Risks

Many of us focus some great efforts on healthy eating. We know what it means to eat the right foods and how great it is for our overall well being. We take a long hard look at the foods that we eat as they relate to the health that we have now and what we wish for in the future. There is much attention paid to a clean healthy diet and that should include foods such as whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy products as well.

So we know what foods we should be eating and where we should focus our attention, and that’s a very important part of the equation. We do however need to focus on our preparation method, that is how we cook our food. This includes the substances that we utilize to cook our food with such as olive oil over margarine. It also highlights what we add to our food such as going easy on the salt and replacing this instead with other spices and herbs. However we also need to consider how we are cooking our food, because some methods can prove to be quite unsafe.

The Truth About Barbeque

We all love a good barbeque, as a matter of fact it is what helps to define summer for so many of us. There’s nothing like throwing our favorite meat on the grill and cooking it up to celebrate warm weather. Many of us turn to the grill as a healthier way to cook as well as it usually means little to no fat used in the preparation and grilling is better than other methods, right? While that may be true in part, the truth is that grilling can actually put you at risk for cancer. So what’s the real problem?

When you grill or barbeque your meat, you are creating carcinogens. This may seem hard to believe as the grill can’t possibly seem that dangerous, but many studies show that grilled meats have a greater carcinogen content than meats cooked other ways. Though there is still a fair amount of debate on the subject, there are plenty of studies that will tell you that grilling too often can increase your consumption of carcinogens-this can then lead to an immediate risk of cancer developing at some point in time.

Are Microwaves Really Safe?

When they first came out, many people were sheepish and even downright scared of microwaves. They weren’t really sure what to think of these boxes that quickly cooked our food. Many of us have come to love and appreciate our microwaves and the speedy way in which they cook our foods. However we may wonder how much danger there is within the microwaves that we utilize?

Yes it is true that microwaves use radiation to cook their food, and in this case it is actually called microwave radiation as a matter of fact. However, the amounts of radiation that are actually given off through your microwave are almost untraceable. Therefore studies say that there is no real link between the radiation used to cook the food in a microwave and cancer. This means that you are perfectly safe to use your microwave to cook, and you may even want to consider using your microwave as an alternative to your grill sometimes.
